Palo Duro State Park — Texas Panhandle

In the words of Georgia O'Keeffe, Palo Duro Canyon "is a burning, seething cauldron, filled with light and color."
It is most certainly hot in the summertime, an extra 10 degrees hotter than temperatures outside the canyon on average. Hiking trail signs give abundant warning that you need to take plenty of water before you depart.
Hairy tarantulas and slithering rattlesnakes encountered along the trails may also add to your trepidations. However, the "light and color" of the canyon mixed with its geologic formations and vistas make any physical discomfort seem petty.
The canyon is a glory to behold. You can view the canyon by driving the paved loop drive, but you will have a much richer experience if you get out of your car and hike or bike the trails.
O'Keeffe was an art instructor in nearby Canyon, TX between 1916 and 1918 at what became West Texas A&M University. During that time Palo Duro was gradually transitioning into a tourist attraction due to its obvious scenic value. The canyon had been part of the massive JA Ranch, managed by Charles Goodnight. Later the Civilian Conservation Corps developed the park. The entry gates, the visitor's center and several cabins show off their handiwork and labor.
The "National Park Service rustic" architectural style of the time is particularly appealing. Amazing what pickaxes, shovels and wheelbarrows can do with a lot of sweat and toil.
Lighthouse trail is the signature trail in the park.
It is about a 6-mile round trip hike, fairly flat until you approach the Lighthouse formation.
Spring and fall are probably the best times to visit. You may camp in the park, or glamp or even stay in some of the charming CCC cabins. There are plenty of Airbnbs right outside the boundaries of the park. Nearby Canyon, TX is a fun college town with plenty of tasty restaurants. You can view some of O'Keeffe's paintings at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum on the campus in Canyon. It is a fabulous museum.
