Bravo to the city of Des Moines and the substantial fortune of John and Mary Pappajohn for redeveloping a section of their downtown. A blighted area, on the western edge of downtown, was transformed into a beautiful sculpture park. A total of 28 sculptures, created by some of today's most revered sculptors, have been interestingly sprinkled along paths winding through 4.4 acres of lawn and trees. A lovely green space surrounded by a now bustling downtown.
The idea wasn't just a favor to art lovers, but a wise investment in their city. The park has pumped new vitality into the area. Property values have risen along with increased economic activity due to the park.
Art doesn't exist solely in the mind of the artist. An audience is required. Everyone will bring their own sensibilities and personalities to interact with the art valued at more than 40 million dollars. Maybe it is just a good place to walk your dog. A place to sit quietly, or maybe one of the sculptures will stimulate a startling reaction within you. Everyone will come away with a different response, but that is the beauty of art.
